Head Of Southern Baptists Sees Gay Marriage Link To North Korea War Threat Against US

Fred Luter, president of the Southern Baptist Convention, says it’s no coincidence that North Korea leader Kim Jong-un‘s threat this week to attack America’s mainland comes when America is debating same-sex marriage and allowing gay people into the Boy Scouts.

“I would not be surprised that at the time when we are debating same-sex marriage, at a time when we are debating whether or not we should have gays leading the Boy Scout movement, I don’t think it’s just a coincidence that we have a mad man in Asia who is saying some of the things that he’s saying,” Luter told radio host and radical religious right “ministry” leader Rick Wiles.

North Korea, among other threats over the past two days, said:

“We will first target and dissolve mainland United States, Hawaii and Guam, and United States military based in South Korea.”

Luter, who is 56, was responding to Wiles’ comments:

“You know at precisely the same time the Supreme Court is hearing these arguments on same-sex marriage in Asia a crazy man in possession of nuclear weapons, Kim Jong-un, is openly saying: I have ordered our military to position our rockets on US targets in Hawaii, Japan, Guam and the mainland of the United States. He has gone into a full state of war this week. I don’t know, Pastor Luter, I don’t know if anybody is — I know they’re not — they’re just not putting this together. You got this happening over here and you got this happening over here: could the two be connected? Could our slide into immorality be what is unleashing this mad man over here in Asia to punish us?”

The correct and simpler answer would have been, “no.”

Luter, (image, right) is the newly-elected head of the Southern Baptist Convention, which is actually the second-largest Christian denomination in the U.S., boasting 16 million people and 45,000 churches across the U.S. He is also head of the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans.

Right Wing Watch posted the above transcript, and the audio, below.

Last year, immediately after Luter’s election as the first African-American head of the Southern Baptist Convention, the SBC passed a resolution denouncing civil rights for LGBT people.
