Harold Ford Supports Marriage Equality – In Narnia

Harold Ford Is Anti-Gay. Seriously. Just a few days ago I wrote just that. In “Harold Ford Is Anti-Gay,” I show that he is on record as being anti-gay.

Here’s some of Ford’s voting record:

* Voted yes to Constitutionally define marriage as one-man-one-woman.
* Voted yes on a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage.
* Voted against ENDA
* Voted no to ban gay adoptions in D.C. (OK, he got one out of four right.)

Maybe I’m crazy, but it’s seems a little convenient that the man who voted to define marriage as one-man-one-woman — twice — announces he now supports marriage equality at the same time he announces his desire to run against an incumbent Senator who has time and again worked hard to support rights for the LGBTQ community.

Then there’s this today, via (the awesome) Elizabeth Benjamin:

“Here’s a TV ad from ex-Rep. Harold Ford Jr.’s (extremely well-documented) 2006 Senate campaign in which he responds to RNC ads that he said “attacked my faith.”

“They said I’m for gay marriage when I voted against it, for giving school girls abortion pills. All of a lie. Here’s what I believe: In God, in you and a new direction. That’s why I approve this message.”

Through his spokesman, Davidson Goldin, Ford told the Post that he now supports gay marriage “in the interest of fairness and equity.”

During an interview with Matt Lauer on the “Today Show” this morning, Ford himself said he was “in support of civil unions since I was elected to Congress in ’96” and has since decided that the difference between that and marriage is “a fiction”.

The only fiction is the fantasyland in which Ford believes same-sex marriage.
