GOP Rep. Steve King Channels Palin By Writing Debate Notes On His Hand
Tea Party Republican Rep. Steve King, the most conservative U.S. Congressman, copied Sarah Palin‘s tactics Tuesday by writing notes on his hand — an apparent debate rules violation. King, who has endorsed Rep. Michele Bachmann, supports legislation legalizing dog fighting, and is an anti-gay religious extremist, was debating his Democratic opponent Christie Vilsack, whom he currently is beating by three points.
King did not deny he had notes written on his hand. And in all fairness, it’s probably challenging remembering all the things — same-sex marriage is wrong, a woman’s right to choose is wrong, science is bad, theocracy is good, pro-life people should get to choose where their taxes go, gays should stay in the closet, Obama is a “Democratic Socialist,” and that “Liberals, Progressives, Che Gueverians, Castroites, Socialists, Trotskyites, Maoists, Stalinists, Leninists, and Marxists” are all enemies of America — you have to remember you’ve said.
Reporting “it looks like he brought notes,” Politico writes:
King campaign spokesman Jimmy Centers said he had “no idea” what the notes on King’s hand actually said that night, but that the congressman has a “habit” of writing himself reminders on his hand and that Tuesday was no different. “The congressman’s got a habit of writing things on his hand. He does it when he’s on the House floor, he does it when he’s campaigning, he does it when he’s with constituents,” Centers said.
“Tuesday he was at the Romney rally in Van Meter, he visited his mother in the nursing home, and then his wife reminded him to smile and he drew a smiley face on his finger.†“If he doesn’t wash his hands good enough, he probably has notes from yesterday,” Centers added.
King, a five-term Congressman from Iowa, should wrote himself a few more notes: get a spokesman who speaks English properly, and learn to wash your hands. Whether King was cheating or unclean, either way, it’s gross.
Bloomberg adds:
Steve King, a five-term Iowa congressman with all the benefits of incumbency, is in a toss-up race in a Republican district against an eighth-grade schoolteacher terrified of public speaking. There are two reasons for the close contest against his Democratic opponent: The teacher is Christie Vilsack, Iowa’s former first lady and wife of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack; and King, an anti-tax Tea Party favorite, has made a name for himself in the House by adopting extreme positions in opposing abortion rights and by likening immigrants to bird dogs. Vilsack’s political pedigree comes with full campaign coffers and on-the-ground support from former President Bill Clinton, who is headlining a rally for her in Sioux City today.
“The race is winnable for Christie Vilsack. That is huge all by itself,†said Ann Selzer, a pollster and president of Des Moines-based Selzer & Company. “Bill Clinton wouldn’t waste his time. They think that it’s contested.â€
Perhaps Vilsack should print out a few bumper stickers: “Vote For Vilsack — Her Hands Are Clean.”
