GOP Congressmen Thwart Democrat’s Girl Scout Cookie Boycott Inquiry

Republican Congressmen during a House Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday thwarted questioning by Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson when he attempted to ask a representative from the SPLC-certified anti-gay hate group Family Research Council about their boycott and prayer vigil against Girl Scouts USA and Girl Scout cookies. As you can see in the video below, Rep. Johnson’s time was repeatedly taken up with ludicrous and irregular objections, and his attempts to enter evidence was also thwarted in an unusual display of partisan disregard for civility and respect.

The hearing was yet another Republican attempt to try to change what is a GOP war on women into a debate about the role of church and state.

Igor Volsky at Think Progress notes that Johnson “sought to challenge the Family Research Council’s campaign to link the Girl Scouts to abortion and the ‘homosexual‘ agenda, during Tuesday’s House Judiciary Committee hearing on contraception, but was repeatedly rebuffed by Republicans on the panel:

“I love thin mints, Girl Scout cookies, what’s your gripe about Girl Scout cookies,” Johnson asked Jeanne Monahan of Family Research Council — who was testifying on behalf of the organization — in the middle of a discussion about religious conscience and birth control. Monahan tried to dismiss the question, but Johnson persisted: “Your organization has sponsored a prayer vigil to stop people from buying Girl Scout cookies, because you allege Girl Scout cookies is affiliated with Planned Parenthood, isn’t that correct?”

Those who are familiar with House and Senate committee hearings will agree that this Republican roadblocking was not normal, showing how frustrated the GOP has become with their failed attempts to take American back to a mythical 1950’s.

It should also be noted that the Congressman who chair this particular hearing of the House Judiciary Committee was notorious birther and Obama impeachment advocate Trent Franks of Arizona, who last year proclaimed that says that straight marriages deserve “special” rights, and says that gay marriage a “threat to the nation’s survival.”

We all owe Congressman Hank Johnson our deep and sincere thanks.
