GOP Congressman Suggests Second Amendment Includes Right To Own Nuclear Weapons

A freshman Tea Party GOP Congressman says the Second Amendment allows Americans to own all the weapons the U.S. Armed Services have. So, logically, a nuclear weapon should be included. Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL), an NRA member who was endorsed by Reps. Ron Paul, Paul Ryan, Michele Bachmann, and Allen West, says — just like with the First Amendment — you cannot impose limits on the text of the Bill of Rights.

Congressman Yoho “sat down with Florida political blog The Shark Tank over the weekend to discuss gun violence,” Scott Keyes at Think Progress — who calls Yoho’s comments “naive and alarming”  — in “Tea Party Congressman: Citizens Should Have Same Weapons As The Military, writes:

The freshman GOPer said he’d spoken with a number of constituents recently and approvingly relayed their sentiment: “when you read the Second Amendment,” Yoho said, “the militia had the same equipment as the military to protect them against the tyrannical government.” Preserving those protections, he argued, is “more important today than ever”:

YOHO: On guns, [my constituents] were saying that the sentiment, when you read the Second Amendment, is that the militia had the same equipment as the military to protect them against the tyrannical government. I think it’s more important today than ever, that we uphold our second amendment.

In fact, the Supreme Court has imposed limits on both the First and Second Amendments. The old, “you can’t yell ‘fire!’ in a crowded theater” comes to mind. And nuclear weapons, rocket launchers, and tanks, for example, are illegal for ordinary citizens to own.

Yoho’s campaign website states:

The right to bear arms is a birth right and should never be threatened. I will fight to preserve our Constitutional rights. I am proud to say I hold an A rating from the NRA.

The Founding Fathers wisely incorporated methods of changing the Constitution — including holding a Constitutional Congress to rewrite it if need be.

Apparently, it’s time.
