Beck made the comments while talking on The Blaze TV — his own online media outlet — with libertarian and entertainer Penn Jillette.
“Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people — I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that’s the Constitution,” Beck said. “The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?”
“What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon,” Beck added. “We would have the ultimate big tent.”
Some media outlets, like Business Insider, are incorrectly interpreting Beck’s past and present remarks on marriage equality:
While Beck’s defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the “same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama” and does not see same-sex unions as a “threat to America.”
Apparently, Business Insider and some LGBT blogs missed this portion of the interview:
“When you get into the gay marriage thing, as most conservatives will tell you, that’s not the agenda. The agenda is to shut down my freedom of speech and my belief in what, what you don’t believe in, but  I do believe, the Bible. So I can live my life the way I believe, that’s freedom of conscience and I have that right to do that.”
So much for embracing same-sex marriage.
Looks to me like Beck is pwning America, and the media, and shame on Penn Jillette and others for falling for it.
Those who claimed, by the way, to have “the same views on marriage equality as President Obama,” before Obama’s May 9 “evolution” was complete, did not really. Obama never believed DOMA was constitutional and never felt the government should work to prevent same-sex marriages.
And claiming to be in favor of civil unions but not full marriage equality is to be anti-gay. Paint it however you like, if you say your marriage is better, more valid, more real than mine, you’re advocating inequality.
