George Takei To Join ‘The New Normal’ As Himself

George Takei will join ABC’s “The New Normal” and play himself, according to the show’s creator and producer, Ryan Murphy. Takei, who is 75 and gay, has become an LGBT activist in recent years, but perhaps will always be known as “Mr. Sulu” on TV’s 1960’s original series, “Star Trek.”

Murphy, who also created the FOX hit “Glee,” “Nip/Tuck,” and “American Horror Story,” today announced the news via Twitter, and added that Nicole Ritchie will also be joining the cast:

Takei responded by tweeting an article from Broadway World.

Earlier this year, Takei recorded a video that branded Tennessee’s top three anti-gay lawmakers “Friends of Dorothy,” and called them brainless, cowardly, and heartless to boot.

And last year, Takei recorded a video, also in support of Tennessee LGBTQ students, titled, “It’s OK To Say Takei!,” in response to that state’s attempts to ban the word “gay” from schools, via a “don’t say gay” bill.
