George Takei: Scalia Should Recuse Himself From Marriage Cases For ‘Repugnant’ Comments

George Takei says Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia should consider recusing himself from the two same-sex marriage cases the Court will hear this term because of his “clearly biased” and “repugnant” statements regarding homosexuality. Scalia is under fire this week after a Princeton University freshman, Duncan Hosie, challenged the 76-year old outspoken conservative jurist on comments in his dissent in Lawrence v. Texas. Scalia was touring, promoting his book, Reading Law: The Interpretation of Legal Texts.Â
“Well, it seems to me that if Justice Elena Kagan can recuse herself from the Boston case, Justice Scalia needs to consider recusing himself,” Takei, a long-time actor and LGBT activist. “He is obviously not unbiased. He is clearly biased in this situation. So how can he look at the issue and make a judgment fairly?,” Takei asked.
“I really do think – first of all, that statement was a repugnant statement to equate homosexuality with murder,” Takei noted. “And any Justice who has so little thought before he speaks, should not be participating in ruling on the cases involving DOMA or Proposition 8. I’m not a lawyer.”
Takei appeared this morning on MSNBC and spoke with Thomas Roberts, and discussed his recent luncheon with birther Donald Trump, whom Takei says seems to be evolving on the issue of marriage, “like the President.” Trump had told Takei he had recently attended a same-sex wedding that was “beautiful.”
Scalia is being challenged for many of his anti-gay remarks, including these, but also, for his statement that, “If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder? Can we have it against other things?â€
