Gay Republican Groups Praise Anti-Gay Paul Ryan As Romney VP Choice

Both national gay GOP organizations, the Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud this morning praised Mitt Romney‘s choice of the very anti-gay Paul Ryan as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

“The selection of Paul Ryan is a bold and inspired pick. Paul Ryan has been the architect of policies that would benefit all Americans, especially gay Americans,” Jimmy LaSalvia, GOProud Executive Director announced in a statement that called Ryan “a bold and inspired pick.”

“Gay Americans understand that without reforms – Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will go bankrupt,” LaSalvia added. “The future prosperity for all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation, is at stake if we do not act today.”

LaSalvia did not mention which gay Americans support his position on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, nor which gay Americans support Paul Ryan’s plans on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Falsely, LaSalvia stated, “Paul Ryan opposes discrimination against gay Americans – voting for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act – and has urged both parties to avoid the culture wars over issues like gay marriage.”

Paul Ryan supports discrimination against gay Americans — voting to not repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and voting several times to enshrine discrimination into the U.S. Constitution via an amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Meanwhile, R. Clarke Cooper, head of the Log Cabin Republicans, in a statement called Ryan “a fair-minded policymaker,” and “a strong choice for vice president” who will “help Republican candidates up and down the ballot.”

Cooper admitted the “Log Cabin Republicans have not completed the endorsement process for the 2012 presidential election,” but stated, “this is a choice that all Republicans can be excited about, and which sends a good message about the kind of campaign Governor Romney wants to run, and the kind of president Governor Romney wants to be.”

Perhaps both the Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud are unaware the President Obama announced his support of same-sex couples marrying in May, the President supports ENDA and the repeal of DOMA — which he stopped defending in court, and has adjusted policies to help gay men and lesbian in bi-national relationships. Also, President Obama pushed through the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and the Democratic National Committee is about to vote to include repeal of DOMA and support for ENDA in its platform.
