Freep This Poll! Conservative Paper Asks, “Is There A Gay Gene?”

The conservative Florida newspaper, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, in an opinion piece by the paper’s editorial board, asks, “Is there a gay gene?” and offers a poll. Gary Stein writes,

Hey, I am no expert on science or genetics. But it seems Broward County commissioner Sue Gunzburger is.

She told the Sun Sentinel’s Brittany Wallman that there is no longer scientific dispute that there a gay gene, and that animal species also can carry the gene.

The problem is, I’ve never seen that undeniable proof that she talks about. I think it’s a question that’s never going to be answered fully.

Gunzburger made her comments after Broward commissioners last week passed a law requiring vendors and contractors on jobs of $100,000 or more, with companies of five or more employees, to offer benefits to domestic partners if they offer them to married spouses.

I like the law as a matter of fairness, although I don’t know if it coincides with saying with absolute certainty that there is a gay gene.

What do you think? Is there a gay gene?

For those interested, The New Civil Rights Movement reported in June:

Sexual orientation is neurobiological and is set at birth, according to a report delivered by Jerome Goldstein, M.D., a board-certified medical neurologist and Director of the San Francisco Clinical Research Center. “Sexual orientation is not a matter of choice, it is primarily neurobiological at birth,” Goldstein told the 21st Meeting of the European Neurological Society (ENS), in Lisbon, Portugal, adding, “Clearly the basis of sexual orientation is in the brain and differences in brain structure and function and the province of neurology.”

We now have even more evidence that being gay or bisexual is not a choice, despite the fact that 42% of Americans still believe being homosexual is “due to factors such as upbringing and environment.” Only 40% of Americans currently believe that people are born gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.

Of course, since there is absolutely nothing wrong with being gay, even if it were a choice, there still would be nothing wrong with choosing to be gay. But medical studies prove that being gay is biological.

So, freep the poll at the conservative Sun-Sentinel. Let’s make sure they know that being gay is not a choice.
