On the eve of the Louisiana primary, Fox News says “It’s over for Santorum” in response to GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum‘s statement Thursday that if Mitt Romney is the Republican presidential nominee, GOP voters might as well vote for President Obama.
“This is it. It’s over for Santorum,” Fox News Business’ anchor Neil Cavuto said Friday night, during a panel discussion debating Santorum’s gaffe from Thursday, which they compared to Governor Howard Dean’s iconic scream during a college rally in 2004 that cost him the Democratic nomination.
“If you’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch-A-Sketch candidate of the future,†Santorum had said, adding, “If you don’t have a choice, then a lot of voters are going to vote for what they have. That’s why we have to have a choice,” Santorum had told reporters, according to a Fox News report earlier Friday:
Poised to do well in Louisiana’s primary Saturday, Santorum sought to explain his comment Thursday in Texas that Romney and Obama are so similar on the issues that Republicans might just as well vote to give the president a second term instead of casting their ballots for Romney.
Santorum argues that he is the only Republican candidate who can offer voters a stark contrast with Obama.
For his part, Santorum categorized the media’s interpretation of his remarks as a “hatchet job.”

“This is the hatchet-job of all time,†the former Pennsylvania senator told Neil Cavuto during an often-contentious Friday afternoon interview on Fox News about Santorum’s comments at a Thursday event in Texas. “I’ve said repeatedly the number-one priority is beating Barack Obama. I’d support anybody. They said, ‘Would you support Ron Paul?’ Of course, I’d support anybody on the Republican ticket and I’ve said it throughout the course of this campaign.â€
