Bryan Fischer, the public face of the certified anti-gay hate group, American Family Association, Friday on his radio program said that gays comprise 2% of the human population, but account for one third of all child sex abuse cases. Apparently, Fischer hasn’t bothered to pull out a calculator, do his homework, or consult reality. Fischer also incorrectly labeled Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky as a “homosexual pedophile.” Sandusky is a married man who fathered and raised several children. He clearly is a pedophile — and a heterosexual.
“If the Boy Scouts allowed homosexuals to become scout leaders that would be the end of the Boy Scouts because we know that we we know that pedophilia occurs at excessive rates in the homosexual community,” Fischer falsely states.
“They’re responsible for a third of all the offenses against children even though they’re 2% of the population, so what’s that, 16, 17 times at the rate the general population offends they offend against children,” he continues, spouting out obviously false statements. “There’s no way parents are going to trust their kids to the Boy Scouts unless unless they are very very careful about screening. They have got to make sure that homosexual pedophiles like this Jerry Sandusky, this Penn State coach, he was a homosexual pedophile and again we’ve got a parade of victims coming through the court  room testifying against him. Boy Scouts cannot let anybody like that into the scout troops.”
Fischer was commenting on the recent news that the Boy Scouts are considering allowing gays into the scouts.
What Fischer failed to reveal is that a recent court case reveals that annually, 60 cases of child sex abuse are found in the Boy Scouts. So, Bryan, since the Scouts don’t allow gays, who are the perpetrators?
Jim Burroway at Box Turtle Bulletin offers this excellent analysis of the religious right’s very false claims that gays are pedophiles at a rate higher than average.
Burroway  rightly notes that “while this lie is horribly libelous to gay men and women, that’s only a small part of the problem. The real harm is to our children. As long as we remain suspicious of the wrong people, predators will continue to have free reign to abuse innocent children. If they remain free from scrutiny because everyone else is focusing on gays and lesbians, more young lives will continue to be shattered and more parents will suffer the agonizing heartache of learning that they trusted someone who destroyed their child’s future.”
