var addthis_config = {“data_track_addressbar”:true};Bryan Fischer says that the terrorists who killed almost 3000 Americans in 2001 on 9/11 “were the agents of God’s wrath” sent in “judgment” and “in order to get our attention as a people.” Fischer, the public face of the certified hate group, American Family Association, made the remarks yesterday on his radio program that reaches an estimated one million Americans across 38 states via the American Family Radio network of almost 200 stations. Fischer did not mention why God was looking to get man’s attention, nor why God chose to get man’s attention in the U.S.A., as opposed to another country.
This claim is far from new, but it is particularly offensive, and totally based in religious interpretation, not fact. 3000 people died on 9/11. The Washington Post notes that 6610 U.S. soldiers have died in the resulting Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and some say well over 600,000 civilians in Iraq have been killed as a result of our misplaced war of retribution there.
If, indeed, the 9/11 attacks were God’s will, as Bryan Fischer says, then man has no right to try anyone associated with those attacks in court, and has no right to wage war in the Middle East, right?
In 2007, Josh Marshall, editor in chief of Talking Points Memo, wrote that “[Pat] Robertson is on record saying that 9/11 was America’s punishment for its sinful gay-loving, abortion permitting culture. As Robertson says on his website, the attacks happened because God withdrew his protection from America. He agreed with the late Jerry Falwell that America ‘deserved‘ 9/11.”
Fischer, Robertson, Falwell: Sick. Disgusting. Feckless. Anti-American. Bastards.
And when will religious leaders, like Timothy Cardinal Dolan, or Pope Benedict XVI, or even Billy Graham, condemn Bryan Fischer for these remarks?
Never.
