Exposed: Tea Party Congressman Lying On His Federal Website

A Tea Party Republican Congressman has been lying to the American people on his federal government website. Rep. Tim Huelskamp‘s (R-KS) government website falsely states that Obamacare is unconstitutional — which is a lie.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Affordable Healthcare Act is indeed constitutional. Huelskamp also falsely states the President’s refusal to defend DOMA is “unconstitutional,” when in fact, it was not, and further, the law itself was deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

One might expect a politician to “massage” the truth a bit on their campaign website, but on their federal government website — where his constituents assume that since it’s a federal website it has to be true? Appalling.

Huelskamp’s website states:

One of the first acts I took in Congress was to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed in 2009 and signed into law by President Obama. I supported repeal because I believe the law is detrimental to the economy, harmful to patient health, and injurious to our healthcare providers. Beyond the implications, the law has been deemed unconstitutional for its mandates requiring individuals to purchase health insurance. It is time to get rid of Obamacare and then proceed with real reform.
[Bolding ours]

That is patently false.

When challenged about it by MSNBC this morning, Rep. Huelskamp brushed it off, stating, “it must be an error on my website,” adding, “that doesn’t mean it’s a good law.”

(In case Huelskamp’s staff ever comes back to work and decides to change the website, here’s a Google cached version of it.)

Huelskamp is also leading the charge against same-sex marriage in Congress, and likes to falsely use the word “unconstitutional” on his federal government website, as he did here:

“It is unconstitutional for the President and his administration to usurp Congress and declare that they will not defend the Defense of Marriage Act, a law signed by Democrat President Bill Clinton.”

As most Americans know, DOMA was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court this year. Further, there is a difference between a president not enforcing a law, and a president not defending a law in court. In fact, thirteen times in our nation’s history, presidents from both parties have decided to not defend unconstitutional laws in court.

But that of course was just an invitation to Rep. Huelskamp. The day after the Supreme Court ruled DOMA unconstitutional, the Kansas Congressman sponsored a bill in the House to ban same-sex marriage across the nation.

“Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman,” reads H.J.RES.51. “Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.”

The bill has 55 co-sponsors.
