Mary J. Blige, winner of nine Grammys and four American Music Awards, performed at the 2012 Democratic National Convention Thursday night. Yetta Kurland, a civil rights attorney and host of radio’s Yetta Kurland LIVE!, in an exclusive interview, spoke with Blige about her position on same-sex marriage equality.
“What do you think about the recent decision by the Democratic National Convention  to support same-sex marriage?,’ Kurland asked, catching up with the multi-platinum recording artist after her performance of “Let’s Get It Started,” which had delegates dancing in their seats — and in the aisles.
“I think it’s wonderful. I think people that support love, it’s amazing. It’s love,” Blige, the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul,” announced in support.
For more than a decade, Blige has supported the flight against HIV/AIDS, and has donated her name and her financial resources to various philanthropic causes.
“The majority of my fans are gay,” Blige told writer Ernest Hardy in a 2007 interview published in The Advocate. “The majority of them are, and I have to really make sure that they know I’m paying attention to the fact that they support me, and I support them.”
