Echoing Obama, Blacks Now Support Gay Marriage At Higher Rate Than Average
A new ABC News/Washington Post poll released today finds that after President Obama’s public announcement of support for same-sex marriage, African-American support of the freedom of same-sex couples to marry has jumped dramatically. Overall, African-Americans now support same-sex marriage at a rate higher than the national average. A record one in six African-Americans, or 59%, now support gay marriage, versus 53% overall support among all Americans. The same pollster ten days ago put African-American support for Obama’s embrace of marriage equality at 54%, suggesting a possible dramatic increase in just the two weeks since the Obama announcement.

Perhaps even more impressive is that one year ago, as ABC News reports, support for same-sex marriage among African-Americans stood at 41%. An 18-point increase in one year — the majority probably in the past two weeks since President Obama’s declaration of support and the process of his announced “evolution” — is astonishing.
This finding, released today from a Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted May 17-20 among a random national sample of 1,004 adults, echoes similar findings from last week’s Washington Post/ABC News poll, which, as The New Civil Rights Movement reported, found President Obama’s support for same-sex marriage equality is actually more popular among Blacks and Hispanics than among whites.
In the ABC News/Washington Post poll taken May 9-13, as we reported, 54% of Blacks supported the President’s decision to support same-sex marriage. After the NAACP, prominent cultural figures like actor Will Smith, rappers T.I., Jay-Z and 50 Cent announced their support over the past week, echoing the President, the numbers have indeed risen.
Langer research, the pollster for ABC/WaPo, also notes:
Fewer whites, 46 percent, approve of Obama’s announcement, and 50 percent support gay marriage… the fewest since 2010.
Ironically, NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, has spent years in an attempt to create a race war by utilizing racially-divisive tactics, under the obviously now mistaken belief that Blacks and Hispanics were against same-sex marriage to a greater degree than whites.
