DOMA: Senate Repeal Debate – Watch The Entire Recorded Hearing (Video)

On Wednesday, in an historic, first-ever hearing to assess the impact of DOMA on families, and to consider its repeal, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a two and a half hour session, chaired by Senator Patrick Leahy, titled, “S.598, The Respect for Marriage Act: Assessing the Impact of DOMA on American Families.”

DOMA, as most now know, is the federal Defense f Marriage Act, which has been found unconstitutional by a federal court judge, the Attorney General, and by President Obama.

There are currently bills in the House and Senate to repeal the law that bans the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, and allows the states to not recognize these legal, civil marriages either.`

This video, which C-SPAN had to be goaded into airing live, and did so only partially, is now available in full below.

The New Civil Rights Movement was the first news site to offer live streaming of the complete Senate hearing, and we’re the first to bring you this video, because we recognize its extreme importance as historical evidence, as well as being an important tool in the battle for equality.

We covered many of the highlights of Wednesday’s hearing. Here is our coverage, with more to follow, as promised:

Wednesday’s hearing was a huge win for the equality side, with false testimony being positively refuted and with the anti-equality witnesses delivering condescending, arrogant, and religious testimony — all inappropriate in a Senate hearing, as you’ll see.

We hope you’ll watch — or at least, listen to, the entire DOMA repeal hearing. It’s excellent!
