Did NOM Chairman Joke It ‘May Be A Good Thing’ If Iran Drops Nuclear Bomb On New York?

Did John Eastman, the Chairman of NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, say, “it may be a good thing” if Iran drops a nuclear bomb on New York? Eastman’s comments were made last month in front of an audience of Tea Party groups in California. In this video, below, Eastman clearly can be heard saying:

“If Iran develops a nuclear weapon, as we think they’re about to, with an intercontinental ballistic missile that they’ve picked up from Russia, and they aim it at New York, and it takes out the entire eastern corner grid…”

Then, immediately seemingly responding to an audience member, Eastman, laughing, says, “that may be a good thing.”

The audience laughed.

The audience member’s comments are inaudible, so it’s unclear what “may be a good thing.” Perhaps the audience member talked about Reagan’s “Star Wars” defense system?

Dr. Eastman is welcome to contact us to “fill in” what the audience member said that elicited his “that may be a good thing” comment.

Eastman spoke to a group of California Tea Party members, and earlier in the video can be heard  comparing President Obama‘s tenure — and especially Obamacare — to Japan Emperor Hirohito’s bombing of Pearl Harbor. “I fear all we have accomplished is awakened a sleeping giant,” Eastman says, wrongly quoting Hirohito (the mis-quote comes from Japanese naval admiral Isoroku Yamamoto.)

Using the old analogy of a frog being boiled alive in water, thinking it’s a nice warm bath, Eastman says Obama turned up the flame and “woke us up” to “something dramatic.”

Eastman is a law professor and called for the resignation of Chief Justice John Roberts for his Obamacare ruling.

Good As You’s Jeremy Hooper, who initially discovered Eastman’s comments, writes at HRC’s NOM Exposed:

“Emperor Hirohito approved the attack on Pearl Harbor, which ultimately led to 2,402 deaths (not to mention countless more deaths in the subsequent war). It’s an action that, in the mind of the National Organization For the Marriage’s chairman of the board, is equivalent to what President Obama has done to awaken the conservative movement in America.”

He adds, “listen as Eastman and his crowd laugh at the possibility of New York being destroyed.”

Remember, John Eastman is the chairman of NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, “a nonprofit organization with a mission to protect marriage and the faith communities that sustain it.”

In February, when the Ninth Circuit reaffirmed California’s Prop 8 is unconstitutional, NOM issued a press release including this:

“Never before has a federal appeals court – or any federal court for that matter – found a right to gay marriage under the US Constitution,” said constitutional scholar John Eastman, who is chairman of NOM. “The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is the most overturned circuit in the country, and Judge Stephen Reinhardt, the author of today’s absurd ruling is the most overturned federal judge in America. Today’s ruling is a perfect setup for this case to be taken by the US Supreme Court, where I am confident it will be reversed. This issue is the Roe v Wade of the current generation, and I sincerely doubt the Court has the stomach for preempting the policy judgments of the states on such a contentious matter, knowing the lingering harm it caused by that ruling.”

Last month, under Eastman’s leadership, NOM President Brian Brown sent followers a fundraising email that threatened, “if people of faith don’t immediately stand up to match the homosexual lobby’s money, gay ‘marriage’ will be imposed as the law of the land for all of us. We can win this fight but not unless Christians and marriage supporters step up their contributions right now.”
