Democrat Who Supports LGBT Equality: “I Will Defeat Allen West”

Democrat Patrick Erin Murphy, who called Allen West a “coward” for switching Congressional districts after Florida’s redistricting plan made it clear he would lose in his current district, has decided his desire to serve the people of Florida as a U.S. Representative includes following West and challenging him in whatever district he retreats to. He’s now running for Congress and says, “I will defeat Allen West in November.”

“Last week, after loudly pronouncing that Democrats should ‘get the hell out of the United States,’ West promptly ‘got the hell’ out of his own district,” a Murphy said. “West abandoned his constituents to seek what he believes is a more politically favorable ground in a neighboring district to the north.”

Murphy, who has been described as “well-financed,” has made defeating Allen West a primary goal, and after reading several local Florida news reports, it looks likely he can.

“I got into this race for two main reasons:  First, I believe the biggest threat to America, our troubled economy, is best addressed by having more people with my experience as a CPA and small business owner in Congress,”Murphy adds. “Secondly, Allen West and the Tea Party represent an enormous threat to the middle class, seniors, the environment, and America’s economic recovery. There is simply no one more divisive in Congress and it’s imperative we make sure he is not re-elected,” said Murphy, according to his website.

The good news for The New Civil Rights Movement readers: Murphy is pro-LGBT equality. And that would be one more vote in overturning DOMA in the House, and one more vote for an inclusive ENDA.

“I believe that all Americans should have equal rights, regardless of race, creed, gender, religion, or sexual orientation – including the rights to marry, adopt, and be free from discrimination. I am committed to fighting for the equal rights of the LGBT community both here in Florida and across the nation.”

The other good news: this awesome video released by the Patrick Murphy campaign. It look like they just took all our Allen West articles and wrapped them up in a pretty video bow.

Thanks, Patrick.

One a personal note, Murphy would represent the town I was born in. One more reason to support him!
