Dammit! NOM ‘Stole’ My ‘Watergate’ Meme!

(And by “stole,” well, I’m sure they didn’t really…Did they?)

NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, has a long and sordid history of taking wht’s not theirs and using it for their own benefit. Take all the copyrighted photos and news articles and music NOM just grabbed and repurposed and republished.

On April 5, I read Brian Brown’s ludicrous attacks on HRC, the Human Rights Campaign, and wrote and article on it, “NOM Plays Watergate? Anti-Gay Org Threatens HRC With Federal Investigation,” because Brown had written, “I would like to know what the HRC knew and when did they know it,” — echoing a phrase made famous during President Nixon’s Watergate era.

Today, Brian Brown wrote, “We demand that federal authorities immediately launch an investigation into this crime…This is reminiscent of Watergate.” No, seriously he did — go look for yourself.

(Also, go look at the Huffington Post’s copy of NOM’s 2008 return with lots of donors names… Some folks gave NOM hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Knights of Columbus is listed as giving a quarter of a million dollars. Remember this when NOM screams they’re poor.)

Why in the world NOM would want to compare anything it does — or anything surrounding it — to Watergate — one of the darkest times in America — is beyond me, but as we’ve learned, NOM doesn’t always make great decisions. Take, for example, their raison d’être.

I won’t waste your time or mine examining the ludicrousness of NOM’s claims, but here’s the rest of Brian Brown’s statement:

“They now realize that they have done something tremendously wrong here or they would not have removed the references,” NOM President Brian Brown said today. “A felony has been committed and the Treasury Department must investigate who within the IRS has committed it, and whether people with the Obama Administration or the HRC are co-conspirators in the criminal release of our confidential tax return. We demand that federal authorities immediately launch an investigation into this crime. This is not a routine leak of some obscure document. We’re talking about someone in the Obama Administration’s IRS releasing to a group headed by President Obama’s national co-chair the private tax return containing confidential donor information of their main opponent. This is reminiscent of Watergate, and the American people are entitled to know the truth of what has occurred.”

OK. I will say this: “someone in the Obama Administration’s IRS”? Seriously. It’s not like government agencies fire everyone and rehire hundreds of thousands of people just because we change presidents every few years. What a joke!

Brian, the American  people couldn’t care less about NOM or your tax returns. Trust me. Give it a rest. The American people are entitled to know where you get your funding from, Brian, and what questionable activity NOM engages in. That I think we’re entitled to.

Now, about all those lawsuits you’ve lost, Brian…
