Conservatives Waging Campaign For Christie To Appoint NOM Co-Founder To Senate

Some conservative voices on the more radical religious right are trying to get New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to appoint National Organization For Marriage (NOM) co-founder Robert P. George to fill the seat of the late Senator Frank Lautenberg. George, a Princeton University professor was appointed by Speaker John Boehner last year to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Commissioners at the USCIRF are government employees, and hold their posts for two years.

Fellow Princeton Professor John Londregan at the National Review — home to George’s fellow NOM co-founder and fellow former NOM Chair Maggie Gallagher, along with racists past and present — writes: “New Jersey Deserves a Senator Robert P. George.”

Dr. George is the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton, and is the Herbert W. Vaughan senior fellow of the Witherspoon Institute — the funder of the now-infamous Regnerus anti-gay parenting “study” that has been debunked, and shown to be created as a tool to attack marriage equality at the Supreme Court.

George, who, despite being involved at the highest levels of America’s professional anti-gay marriage machine, likes to keep out of the spotlight, is on many Boards of Directors, including the Institute for American Values, the American Enterprise Institute, and the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, to name a few.

But, after the National Organization For Marriage, one of George’s most dangerous creations is the Manhattan Declaration, which he wrote, along with the late Chuck Colson (of Watergate fame). The Manhattan Declaration is a statement signed by over a half-million anti-gay and anti-abortion  activists who pledge, essentially, anarchy rather than support what they believe are immoral institutions or actions. Created primarily for Orthodox Evangelical Christians, the eight-page document concludes with this pledge:

Because we honor justice and the common good, we will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia, or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriages or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family. We will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar’s. But under no circumstances will we render to Caesar what is God’s.

Here’s a rundown of some of those attempting to start a “Robbie George for Senate” campaign:
