Clinton Top Aide Threatened, Placed Under Security After Bachmann Attack

Huma Abedin, a top and long-time aide to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has been placed under heightened security after a New Jersey man made unspecified threats against her. Congresswoman Michele Bachman has waged a small war against Huma Abedin, wife of former Congressman Anthony Weiner, since June, claiming she has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

“An individual, described as a Muslim man, made the unspecified threat after Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) last week claimed Abedin’s family had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and asked for a probe to see if she is helping the Islamist organization,” the New York Post today reported. “The man was questioned by the NYPD and the State Department and has not been charged, sources said.”

Speaker of the House John Boehner, Senator John McCain, and a host of other Republicans — not to mention many Democrats — have subsequently attacked Bachmann’s comments. This is an all-too rare example of Republicans criticizing members of their own party — an indication of just how harmful Bachman”s attacks are to the credibility of the GOP.

Boehner this week said, “I think accusations like this being thrown around are pretty dangerous.”

And Senator McCain stood on the floor of the Senate tot testify on behalf of Abedin’s character, and railed against Bachmann:

“To say that the accusations made in both documents are not substantiated by the evidence they offer is to be overly polite and diplomatic about it. It is far better, and more accurate, to talk straight: These allegations about Huma, and the report from which they are drawn, are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable citizen, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant.”

Bachmann on Thursday added Congressman Keith Ellison to her list of those she claims have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.
