Clinton Fein, Acclaimed Author, Artist, Activist, Joins The New Civil Rights Movement

Clinton Fein, the internationally acclaimed author, artist, and First Amendment activist, has joined The New Civil Rights Movement, a progressive journal of gay and civil rights-focused national and international political news and opinion. Perhaps best-known for his 1997 First Amendment Supreme Court victory against United States Attorney General Janet Reno, Fein has also gained international recognition for his Annoy.com site, and for his work as a political artist. Fein is on the Board of Directors of the First Amendment Project, “a nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and promoting freedom of information, expression, and petition.”

Fein’s political and privacy activism has been widely covered. His work also led him to be nominated for a 2001 PEN/Newman’s Own First Amendment Award.

“A 2004 exhibit in San Francisco was explicitly intended to make viewers aware of the ‘nightmarish rollbacks of the Constitution by an Administration that has done more kill civil liberties than Osama bin Laden could ever have wished for in his wettest dreams,'” Peter Howard Selz wrote of Fein’s work. Fein’s later work, giant-size reenactments of the Abu Ghraib torture images were exhibited in San Francisco, New York, London and Beijing and have been published twice in Art in America magazine, which wrote, “his invocation of old master painting, far from summoning up Christian martyrdom as do the Abu Ghriab canvases of Fernando Botero, delivers us to the dark threshold of inhumanity conjured by Goya.”

“Clinton Fein is an icon across many worlds. His work is inspirational, and his passion for truth, civil rights, and freedom are recognized internationally. The New Civil Rights Movement is fortunate and honored to have Clinton join our growing group of writers, activists, and artists who are working hard to make the world just a little bit better,” writes David Badash, founder and editor of The New Civil Rights Movement. “Clinton’s ground-breaking gay rights and civil rights focus mesh perfectly with our work. We look forward to Clinton sharing his unique and challenging perspective, and know our fast-growing, intelligent, and politically savvy readership do too.”

“The New Civil Rights Movement puts out high quality, critically important information at a prolific rate, keeping me up to speed on much that is going on, so I am grateful to be able to contribute content to its smart and growing audience,” said Fein. “Not to mention the opportunity to write alongside some very talented writers.”

Fein, who was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, lives and works in San Francisco, California, and also writes at Red Room.
