Gay Rights Activist Urges Equality March
Cleve Jones, nationally-known AIDS and LGBT activist and Harvey Milk protégé, spoke Saturday afternoon at New York City’s Pride Rally in Bryant Park. I was lucky enough to be able to record the last portion of his speech on my iPhone. Here’s what he said, rallying supporters to march on Washington:
“We have to organize in all 435 Congressional districts. And we have to be very clear in saying, “We are equal. We are equal in our abiulity to form and sustain loving relationships. We are equal in our ability to serve in the armed forces. We are equal in our ability to parent and to co-parent and adopt. We are equal in our ability to form strong communities and build healthy neighborhoods. We are equal in the eyes of God and we demand equality in the eyes of the law.
“The next step for this is October 11th. I need New York to be there! October 11th. Washington D.C. Send a message to President Obama and the United States Congress and the Supreme Court that we are equal. Will you be there? Thank you and we’ll see you there!”
