Chrysler Calls Romney’s Auto Industry Lies ‘Extravagant Fantasies’

Mitt Romney has been lying his way through Ohio — falsely stating that Chrysler is shifting its production of Jeeps to China — and forcing Chrysler to label his lies as “extravagant comments,” and “unnecessary fantasies.”

Now, after that unprecedented pushback, the Romney campaign has just released an ad that claims Mitt Romney “has a plan” for the auto industry and “will do more” than President Obama did.

Typical lying Mitt Romney.

Remember, by the way, in Romney’s now infamous New York Times op-ed, titled, “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt,” Romney clearly opposed the Obama administration’s plan that saved the American auto industry and hundreds of thousands of jobs with it.

Of course, Romney, ever the cynic, bet and made an estimated $15.3 million on the Obama deal — no reason to let a financial catastrophe go without making a profit on people’s misery.

Also of course, the images in this ad are beyond pandering, and treat the American people as brainless robots — which Romney is hoping they’ll be for him.

Romney’s “fact checkers confirm [Obama’s] attacks on Mitt Romney are false,” has been debunked by The Nation, which adds:

Of course, this kind of deception is emblematic of the campaign Romney and his supporters have waged in the last few days.

And “Mitt Romney has a plan to help the auto industry” goes against all Republican and Romney principles, period.

Romney’s new ad does tell one truth: the images Romney uses, of 1950’s and 1960’s era automobiles, are exactly the era Romney is trying to take American back to.

The ad falsely claims “plans to return Jeep output to China,” citing a Bloomberg article which Chrysler itself addressed on its website three days ago:

Jeep in China

There are times when the reading of a newswire report generates storms originated by a biased or predisposed approach.

On Oct. 22, 2012, at 11:10 a.m. ET, the Bloomberg News report “Fiat Says Jeep® Output May Return to China as Demand Rises” stated “Chrysler currently builds all Jeep SUV models at plants in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. Manley (President and CEO of the Jeep brand) referred to adding Jeep production sites rather than shifting output from North America to China.”

Despite clear and accurate reporting, the take has given birth to a number of stories making readers believe that Chrysler plans to shift all Jeep production to China from North America, and therefore idle assembly lines and U.S. workforce. It is a leap that would be difficult even for professional circus acrobats.

Let’s set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China. It’s simply reviewing the opportunities to return Jeep output to China for the world’s largest auto market. U.S. Jeep assembly lines will continue to stay in operation. A careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg take would have saved unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments.

The problem isn’t just that candidate Mitt Romney is a liar. The problem is that he will lie as President, and what he will lie about, if he, God forbid, becomes President.

Watch:

UPDATE:

Sam Stein at Huffington Post and I apparently are on the same wavelength. Stein touches on the Romney ad and debunks the lies, though he claims they are “so clever” that “no direct claim … can be called a lie.”

We disagree, but his reporting is as usual very thorough.
