Christie’s Ban On Ex-Gay Therapy ‘Strips Religious People Of Equal Rights’ Says Gallagher

Maggie Gallagher has demonstrated time and time again her poor decision-making abilities when it comes to aligning with organizations. While she got lucky as co-founder of NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, she was unable to create a respected organization that functioned professionally. NOM is a bunch of religious-funded amateurs who have the integrity and attention span of a rabid dog. Their antics are embarrassing, ineffective, and the organization needs to be disbanded to save whomever (they have three main donors) is secretly funding them further embarrassment.

Now, in her role as Chairman of the Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund — a group practically no one has ever heard of — Gallagher was forced to issue a “Major Correction” when a press release attacking New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s signing of a ban on so-called “ex-gay” therapy and the larger group of sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) was issued under her name by the Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund.

Yesterday morning, Gallagher wrote at the National Review:

A press release attributed to Maggie Gallagher was released by staff error yesterday without my knowledge or approval. These are not my words nor my sentiments. I will read the bill Chris Christie signed carefully before I issue any statement, if I do.

And now she has.

Governor Chris Christie‘s signing into law on Monday a ban on sexual orientation change efforts denies people of faith equal rights, Gallagher says today — but that’s only the start.

Gallagher applies Christie’s act — which protects minors from brutal antediluvian torture, including electroshock “therapy” on the victim’s genitals, made-up acts like violently beating a surrogate with a bat, groping one’s genitals or masturbating in front of a therapist,  and false “hope” of becoming heterosexual — into the larger story of so-called “religious freedom.”

Religious freedom is part of our First Amendment, but people like Gallagher and the radical religious right — with whom she is increasingly aligning — have bastardized the concept and use it as a bat to bludgeon people, figuratively, over the head when their particular form of madness is not supported by those sane enough to know better.

Gallagher says that Chris Christie “is willing to use government power to restrict liberty and strip religious people of equal rights to live as we choose.”

As much as Chris Christie is a politician who is happy to swing with the wind, who is happy to veto his own gun control legislation, who is happy to veto a same-sex marriage bill that passed both the New Jersey House and Senate, one that the majority of New Jersey voters wanted, Governor Chris Christie is now a governmental tyrant stripping the faithful of their religious rights, Gallagher says.

Give me a break.

Maggie Gallagher’s time has come and gone. She has become irrelevant in the culture war conversation. Which is as it should be.

I will offer her one note of respect. In my opinion, Gallagher left NOM when it became clear that the Board of Directors wanted to move in a hostile, racist, horribly vile direction. And once she left, they did.

But Gallagher’s false charges of religious liberty violation are laughable.

If they were valid, we’d still be able to stone people to death for working on the Sabbath — and get away with it.
