Is New York State Senator and Reverend Rubén DÃaz a Christian victim? In an attempt to defend his vote against New York’s same-sex marriage bill that passed and was signed into law last month, and to garner sympathy, New York State Senator and Reverend Rubén DÃaz today posted a 630 word diatribe painting himself as a Christian victim, titled, “Unashamed To Be A Christian.” It should have been titled, “Unashamed To Be A Christian Victim.” Diaz is no victim, he’s a man of God and an elected official who’s too concerned with himself to see that he’s the victimizer, and guilty of felonious assault for his actions.

On rubendiaz.com, which (in an inappropriate mixing of church and state) says at the top, “NY State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz, 32nd Senatorial District – Bronx County,” Diaz writes, “I wear my vote as a badge of honor.” No doubt he does. But as the only Democrat to vote against Governor Cuomo’s same-sex marriage equality bill, Diaz also wears a badge of shame.
Diaz states, “Yesterday I received a series of five emails in my Senate account from one person that read like homicidal rantings,” yet has never offered any proof of these emails, nor has Reverend DÃaz offered any proof of the supposed death threats he claims he received before his infamous vote against the wishes of a large section of his constituents.
In a swipe at New York City-based blogger Joe.My.God., Diaz writes, “I am amazed that the author of that site continues to fixate on me as he does,” totally unable to reconcile his own vote of hatred, his own anti-Christian behavior, his own support of hate speech, with the activism and protected political speech of a person who has done far more for his community than Diaz has done for the people he was elected to represent.
Let’s compare the two New York City activists.
One, Joe Jervis, aka Joe. My. God., spends his days and nights educating his community and pointing out hypocrisy and hatred on the Right, including that of New York State Senator and Reverend Rubén DÃaz. Granted, Jervis uses impolite speech to get his message across at times, but rarely is it undeserved.
The other, an elected official, spends his days and nights crossing the line between church and state, attending rallies, like one sponsored by the anti-marriage group National Organization for Marriage, that included a preacher who proclaimed that gays are “worthy of death,” just minutes before New York State Senator and Reverend Rubén DÃaz spoke. Diaz neither acknowledged the hate speech, nor challenged it, nor asked the preacher to apologize to his constituents. In effect, Diaz stood on stage and condoned a call to genocide, without giving it a second thought.
How Christian is that?
Diaz lies, and lies, and lets others — like Maggie Gallagher’s National Organization for Marriage — lie for him. Diaz does not condemn hate speech (that in other parts of the civilized world, like the U.K., would put people in jail,) Diaz has stated he does not believe in the separation of Church and State (why should he when he gets two paychecks from operating against the Constitution?) and Diaz aligns himself with anti-gay haters.
Who is the victim here? The New York State Senator and Reverend who has spent his elected career railing against the LGBT community, despite the fact that his own granddaughter is a lesbian? The man who mixes his political agenda with his religious one? The man who cannot see a line between his activities as a Reverend and his actions as a Senator? The man who preaches hate against an entire group of American citizens? Or the blogger who attacks the bigot?
Jervis, in response to today’s attack on him by New York State Senator and Reverend Rubén DÃaz wrote, rather ineloquently, “Diaz, as always you’ve got a lot of nerve to whine like a titty-baby because somebody on the internet was mean to you. What outrageous hypocrisy to hear this from a man who just led thousands and thousands of raging evangelicals through the streets of my city as they waved signs calling for my eternal damnation and gave speeches LITERALLY calling for my murder. Fuck YOU, Ruben Diaz. Fuck you right in the motherfucking ear.”
Who could blame him?
If New York State Senator and Reverend Rubén DÃaz wants to paint himself as a Christian victim, fine. But when he supports genocide and calls, in his capacity as both a man of god and an elected official for “eternal damnation,” that’s not being victimized. That’s downright felonious assault.
