Chick-Fil-A Veteran: Employees ‘Expect To Get Patted On The Back’ For Anti-Gay Hate
A nine-year veteran employee of Chick-Fil-A quit, despite describing himself as a “Chick-Fil-A enthusiast,” because of the company’s anti-gay hate. Steve Cammett, who worked both in Chick-Fil-A restaurants and the company’s headquarters, told CBS News in Atlanta, “I feel like right now Chick-fil-A is a safe place for people to go in and hate, and at the end they expect to get patted on the back for it. And I don’t want to work in that kind of environment.”
Cammett also told CBS that his late sister confided in him she was a lesbian. Sadly, he attributes this to her being sexually abused as a child (of course, child sex abuse does not make someone gay).
Cammett, who quit in August, adds:
“Putting their arms around that person and saying, ‘We sure are glad that your company is taking a stand against those perverts.’ And this person is gay. And they didn’t know it. And I just thought ‘wow, what has happened here?’ Chick-fil-A allowed a mindset to continue, especially amongst their customers, that seemed to think that Chick-fil-A didn’t like homosexuals.”
Cammett, who has been married three times and applied to own a Chick-Fil-A franchise, sent an open letter to Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy, in which he states he feels “I may have been disqualified in part because of my history of being married multiple times.”
I would be untrue to myself and my God if I hid the fact that I felt judged and hurt by your comments regarding gay marriage and your statement that “we are still married to our first wivesâ€. I realize that you did not mean to judge me and hurt me by those statements, and I also know that they DID very deeply hurt me, many of my gay friends/family and those Chick-fil-A employees who are gay and/or not still married to their first wives. During my tenure with Chick-fil-A I have hired and worked side-by-side with a number of gay and divorced people. They are amongst the very finest of God’s children, not to mention hard workers who also passionately support the Chick-fil-A business model!
Cammett also asks Cathy to “consider making a public statement declaring your love, acceptance and support for gay and divorced people.”
If Cammett’s belief is true that he was “disqualified in part” from being a franchise owner “because of my history of being married multiple times,” he would have quite a lawsuit on his hands.
