Charlie Crist Regrets Signing Gay Marriage Ban, Wants To Be Judged By His Deeds

Newly-minted Democrat Charlie Crist says he regrets signing Florida’s 2006 same-sex marriage ban and wouldn’t do it again today. The former Florida Republican governor who last week while at the White House signed papers making him a Democrat, after spending a short time as an Independent, told reporters today — as evidence of where his heart is — to look at the deeds he’s done.

“Would I do it today? No,” Crist said, in response to a reporter’s question about the marriage ban, as seen in this Tampa Bay Times video, below. “I think the best way to judge where my heart is is to look at the deeds that I have done, whether as attorney general, governor -restoration of rights, civil rights cases, things of that nature that I think show a compassionate heart and hopefully someone who cares and knows who the boss is – and the boss is the people of Florida.”

If Crist is planning on running for governor of Florida again, as many assume he is, he’ll need to come up with a better defense than pointing to his anti-gay acts as evidence of where his heart is.

Crist has a long road to redemption among the LGBT community. For starters, many believe Crist is gay, as Kirby Dick’s 2009 film, “Outrage,” proposed.

Secondly, signing a bill banning same-sex couples from ever marrying is a really big deal.

The LGBT community doesn’t take kindly to those who try to prevent us from marrying — especially those who themselves are gay.
