Catholic Church Sent Representative To Oppose Florida Domestic Partnership Bill

In what can only be viewed as an extension of Pope Benedict XVI‘s declared international religious holy war on gays, the Catholic Church actually sent a representative to speak out against  a Florida domestic partnership bill yesterday.

Michael B. Sheedy (image, top,) the Director for Public Policy of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops spoke before Florida Senate committee that heard supporters and opponents of a simple, basic, bill that would create a domestic partnership registry.

Claiming domestic partnership might diminish the institution of marriage in the eyes of some, Sheedy told the state senators that the Catholic Church’s “primary concern with this bill is that it does blur the distinction between marriage and all other types of social relationships.”

Sheedy lamented that “by many measures, marriage and family life is struggling, is declining,” and concluded that the domestic partnership bill would merely be “broadening the definition of what constitutes a family” and therefore would not be helping people, but rather, would create confusion.

Sheedy also told the senators that in Spain, the rate of marriage declined when alternatives, like domestic partnerships, were introduced. Spain.

Sheedy, answering a question from state senator Jeff Clemens, said, “I’ve heard anecdotes of people not having access to loved ones in times of trial, those are certainly very problematic stories to hear.”

Senator Clemens responded, “They’re not ‘anecdotal’ — they’re the people sitting behind you.”

You can view the entire hearing on The Florida Channel’s website. Sheedy’s testimony begins at about the 70 minute mark.
