Cain Accuser Refuses To Back Down: “It qualified as sexual harassment”

The lawyer for one of Herman Cain‘s sexual harassment accusers stood in front of reporters today to say his client was refusing to back down and that Cain had not told the truth. Joel Bennett, who was the woman’s lawyer in 1999 when the accusations were leveled against Cain, the CEO of the National Restaurant Association, told reporters today, “We’re not going to get into what was physical and what was verbal. It qualified as sexual harassment in our opinion.”

David Edwards at The Raw Story reports:

“In 1999, I was retained by a female employee of the National Restaurant Association concerning several instances of sexual harassment by the then-CEO,” attorney Joel Bennett told reporters. “She made a complaint in good faith about a series of inappropriate behaviors and unwanted advances from the CEO. Those complaints were resolved in an agreement with her acceptance of a monetary settlement. She and her husband see no value in revisiting this matter now, nor in discussing the matter any further, publicly or privately. In fact, it would be extremely painful to do so. … My client stands by the complaint she made.”

Bennett added that his client believed that this statement refuted the Republican presidential candidate’s claim that no sexual harassment had taken place.

“I don’t remember the exact time period of the incidents, but it was over a period of a month or two as I recall. … We’re not going to get into what was physical and what was verbal. It qualified as sexual harassment in our opinion.”

In 1996, Herman Cain was 51, his daughter Melanie Cain was 24, and one of the young women he stands accused of sexually harassing — who was described by a Republican pollster who worked for Cain and witnessed his sexual harassment — was as young as “maybe two years out of college.” So, 23 or 24. Not even half his age.

Perhaps the allegations of sexual harassment point to a history of infidelity? Has any reporter asked Cain if he has ever been unfaithful to his wife? It’s not out of the realm of possibility, nor is the question, given Cain’s railing against same-sex marriage, and singing the praises of traditional marriage, too personal.

And perhaps his possible infidelity is the reason Cain chose to not sign both the Family Leader’s marriage pledge, and the National Organization For Marriage’s marriage pledge?
