Bristol Palin‘s latest blog entry claims there is a Christians vs. gay people debate, and that she is the tolerant one, despite being the one who is jamming her (religious) beliefs down America’s throat. Palin forgets that many gay people are Christians.
“To the Left, ‘tolerance’ means agreeing with them on, well, everything. To me, tolerance means learning to live and work with each other when we don’t agree – and won’t ever agree. So if I have a gay dance partner, we may have some interesting discussions about morality, marriage, and whether the government made him a great dancer because it built the roads that he drove on to dance practice.”
Palin — the younger one who makes money advocating for abstinence-only education while being an unwed mother and raising her child amidst a C-list reality TV show — says her “responsibility is pretty darn clear: to treat people as I would like to be treated, to be gracious, and – yes – to uphold and advance my Christian principles in all that I do.”
But to Palin — the younger one, and, no doubt, all of them — “upholding and advancing Christian principles in all that I do” does mean evangelizing and “witnessing” the hell out of people who just don’t want to hear it.
Palin touts the right’s usual “we treat everyone the same” baloney, when in fact she does the opposite.
Bristol Palin calls the media “simplistic,” and “the left” intolerant.
Palin adds, “I’d love to dance with a gay partner, a straight partner, or anything in between.” So, people — or their sexuality — are now “things”?
On Facebook, Palin writes:
Now that I’m going to be on Dancing with the Stars, keep getting asked the same question. Please share this, bc it deals with big misunderstandings about Christians, gay rights, and how people should treat each other.
By pitting Christians against gay people, Bristol Palin ignores the beautiful fact of America that a very large number of Christians — and the majority of Catholics — support same-sex marriage and equality for gay people.
The debate we’re having in America is not a religious one, it is not a “free speech” one, it is not a First Amendment one. The debate we’re having about same-sex marriage and equality is actually a humanist one, and one that doesn’t require one to be Catholic, Christian, Muslim, atheist, agnostic, or anything else. It requires an understanding of the term “civil marriage,” which is what you get — a license — when you get married. It’s the state, not the church, that makes your marriage legal.
Marriage is an institution of the state, not of religion.
And when Bristol Palin and her ilk figure that out, we can all move forward. Actually, America will have moved on long before that.
