Boehner: I’m Spending $3 Million Defending DOMA To Show Obama He Doesn’t Make The Rules

John Boehner at a Thursday press conference shockingly admitted the reason — at least one of them —  that he is supporting DOMA in court is to show Barack Obama that the two-term President doesn’t get to make the rules. Boehner, as both Speaker of the House and as the head of the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG) has secretly and repeatedly increased the budget of his hand-picked lawyer who is defending DOMA in the federal courts. That figure is now $3 million. The lawyer is Paul Clement, who, by the way, has lost every DOMA case he’s tried.

“DOMA was a law passed by the House, the Senate and signed into law by President Clinton,” Boehner told reporters. “And in our system of government, the administration doesn’t get to decide what’s constitutional. The Supreme Court does. And our financing the lawsuit was to make sure that the proper forum was used to make sure that we know what’s constitutional and what isn’t.”

So, Speaker Boehner is spending $3 million of your tax dollars to “make sure that the proper forum was used”?

Baloney.

Republican and Democratic Presidents over the past fifty years have decided to not defend 13 different laws because they deemed them unconstitutional. The BLAG never stepped in — until now — to defend those laws in court.

Boehner is not telling the truth. And DOMA has already been deemed unconstitutional by dozens of federal judges, so he’s being even more deceitful.

Boehner not once has even mentioned the lives his actions are negatively impacting.

The full truth is Boehner is extremely anti-gay, as evidenced by him appointing to a government job with international importance, the co-founder of NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, Robert P. George.

Here’s what we wrote a few days ago about the subject upon reporting the news that Boehner said he “can’t imagine” supporting his own child’s same-sex marriage:

One year ago this week, John Boehner appointed National Organization For Marriage(NOM) co-founder and former Chairman Dr. Robert P. George to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Commissioners at the USCIRF are government employees, and hold their posts for two years.

Last year, Dr. George appeared on anti-gay advocate and founder of James Dobson’s show claimed that President Barack Obama’s policies were a “weapon” of the federal government designed to “undermine religious liberty.”

Days after George’s appointment to the USCIRF, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) released previously-sealed court documents that included internal NOM documents which provide a road map and board-approved strategy for using race-baiting and religion as tactics to divide the Democratic party on the issue of same-sex marriage and to bring down President Obama.

Dr. George is credited with writing the Manhattan Declaration, which has been signed by Christian Evangelical leaders who promise “resistance to the point of civil disobedience against any legislation that might implicate their churches or charities in abortion, embryo-destructive research or same-sex marriage.”

George has been praised by the late anti-gay activist, Chuck Colson, and in 2011 Dr. George wrote that “‘gay marriage’ will inevitably undermine all marriages.”
