Bloomberg Urges New York State To Pass Gay Marriage Bill

NYC Mayor In Prep For Third Term Race Does The Right Thing, Almost

Michael Bloomberg, billionaire, CEO, Mayor of New York, Independent. Back in 2007, when he was debating a run for the White House, Bloomberg, always more liberal than conservative, always more pragmatic than anything else, left the Republican party and became an Independent. Now that he’s trying an end-run around term limits in New York City, he’s trying to get on the ballot as a Republican again.

Which is why Mayor Mike is meeting Chairman Mike and a host of Republican Party officials, appropriately, on April 1st.

So, in the midst of this, it is good to hear that Bloomberg today re-confirmed his support of gay marriage. If you’re trying to get elected in new York City, supporting gay marriage is a must. But Bloomberg the pragmatist did it only half way. Via Daily News:

“Mayor Bloomberg said Wednesday night he stands ready to ask the Legislature to allow gay marriage in New York State, but doesn’t know when the time will be right.”

Gutsy to do it while fighting the GOP, less so because he didn’t commit to “now”. We’re happy for his support, though it’s no surprise. Bloomberg is on record for supporting gay marriage. If we can get him to push the state legislature for a bill this year, in conjunction with Senator Chuck Schumer’s declaration earlier this week, well, that would be a big win.

The stars, it seems, are aligning.
