Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, last night in a debate with new HRC head Chad Griffin told  CNN’s Piers Morgan, “I want the law to discriminate against all alternative lifestyles.” The conversation was prompted by President Obama’s interview Wednesday with Robin Roberts during which he voiced support for same-sex marriage.

“Obama has always liked the idea of two men getting married. He had to change, because he wanted to become president and he said he invoked his Christian moorings,” said the Catholic League President. “Now today he had to wiggle with that.”
Bill Donohue, who himself is divorced and the father of two now-grown children, told Piers Morgan, “I want the law to discriminate against all alternative lifestyles,” which, Donohue says, includes straight unmarried “co-habitating” couples, and, of course Donohue’s favorite target, gay couples.
Earlier yesterday, Donohue, after President Obama said he supports same-sex marriage, fear-mongered with the suggestion that polygamy will be Obama’s next marriage evolution step.
And last month, Donohue offered a “thought experiment” on abortion that focused on the “weeding out” of gay babies.
Donohue, whom the New York Times described in 2009 as “perennially indignant,” also trotted out a supposed case of a brother and sister who are trying to get married. “It’s in the courts,” Donohue screamed when Chad Griffin cooly characterized the entire issue — including Donohue’s bringing it up — as “ridiculous.”
Griffin did have kind words, however, for President Obama.
“Every single night, LGBT people get in their beds, turn out the light, and instead of closing their eyes, and going to sleep like their friends, and their parents, and their colleagues, they stay awake and stare at the ceiling fearing the next day,” revealed the incoming President of the Human Rights Campaign. “What the President of the United States said today – the first President of the United States said today – is that he cares for them. He is their president, he is standing up for them and he believes that they too are equal under the law. And that is incredibly significant.”
