Bikers Block WBC From 9-Year Old’s Funeral After Westboro Links OK Tornado To Jason Collins

The Westboro Baptist Church this week linked the devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma, which killed 24 people, including nine children, to support for openly-gay NBA player Jason Collins, and threatened to protest funerals of several of the tornadoes’ victims, including 9-year old Nicholas McCabe.

The WBC, which call themselves God Hates Fags, threaten to protest many funerals — usually those of military service members, celebrities, gay people, and victims of natural or man-made disasters and terrorist attacks — to spread their hate and homophobia:

Sometimes they show up, oftentimes, they do not.

But fortunately for the country, a group called the Patriot Guard Riders does show up, even if the WBC does not. The Patriot Guard Riders are a motorcycle group whose “job” is to convene en masse dozens if not more than one hundred of its members at these funerals, as a show of force against the WBC — effectively blocking them from view if they do show, and effectively scaring them away from even trying.

And that’s what happened this week.

Westboro’s Fred Phelps Jr., scion of the founder of the WBC, claimed that God sent the tornadoes to Oklahoma because Oklahoma City Thunder basketball player Kevin Durant publicly announced his support of Jason Collins, the NBA center who recently announced he is gay.

Later, via Twitter, the Westboro Baptist Church announced their plan to protest funerals of the Moore, Oklahoma tornado victims.

Yesterday, there were many claims that all members of the Westboro Baptist Church tried to get a permit to picket the Oklahoma funerals, were denied, then showed up and were arrested. There does not seem to be any evidence that claim is true.

But here’s what did happen: The Patriot Guard Riders showed up.
