Bachmann: I Was Joking When I Said Irene Is God’s Way Of Saying Cut Spending

Michele Bachmann says she was only joking when she said over the weekend that Hurricane Irene and the earthquake that recently hit America’s east coast were God’s way of saying, “cut spending.” Bachmann appeared in Florida this weekend and said,

“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”

But Bachmann’s press secretary, Alice Stewart now claims, “Obviously she was saying it in jest,” according to Talking Points Memo.

The death toll from Hurricane Irene now stands at 24, and could continue to rise.

In this video below, CNN notes Bachmann has been scored as the most conservative GOP candidate.

Bachmann is a Republican presidential candidate for the 2012 election, and has come under scrutiny for her anti-gay comments, among others, and for her Christian counseling center she co-owns with her husband Marcus, in which they practice a dangerous form of ex-gay therapy, designed to change someone from homosexual to heterosexual.

No doubt Bachmann also said these things in jest:

“It’s part of Satan I think to say that this is “gay.” It’s anything but gay.”

“If you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. It is personal bondage, personal despair and personal enslavement.”

“Don’t misunderstand. I am not here bashing people who are homosexuals, who are lesbians, who are bisexual, who are transgender. We need to have profound compassion for people who are dealing with the very real issue of sexual dysfunction in their life and sexual identity disorders.”

We’re all laughing, Michele. I’m sure those jokes go over very big in your home district back in Minnesota, which suffers from one of the highest rates of anti-gay bullying-related suicide in the country.

Michele Bachmann. Stand up comedian.
