Steve Jobs, co-founder and former chairman emeritus of Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), died one year ago today. In his memory, Apple CEO Tim Cook took over the Apple.com front page to post a warm “tribute,” and the Mark Santoro, mayor of Cupertino, the home of Apple HQ, ordered the city’s flags at half-staff.
“I hope that today everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place,” Cook noted:
“One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No other company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our value originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.”
Cupertino Mayor Santoro added:
“Steve grew up and went to school in Cupertino. As his company and vision grew, so our entire community came to realize we can change the world for the better,†said Mayor Santoro. “Placing our city flag at half staff is a small reminder of the profound and very local impact this man had on our community.â€
Jobs died after a long bout with pancreatic cancer, and built one of the most LGBT-welcoming companies in the world.
On a personal note, Jobs was an inspiration and an icon to me, and thoughts of his passing still bring a tear to my eyes. I remain a loyal customer (and very minor stockholder!)
