Anti-Gay NY Sen. Díaz: I Was “Misquoted,” Marriage Equality Still “Inevitable”

New York State Senator and Reverend Rubén Díaz was quoted in the Wall Street Journal by the AP on Monday, as we reported, saying that marriage equality in New York was “inevitable.” Now New York State Senator and Reverend Rubén Díaz claims he was “misquoted.”

Here’s what the AP wrote:

“A leading opponent of gay marriage in New York’s Senate doesn’t know how his colleagues will vote but says same sex marriage is inevitable at some point soon in New York.

“Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr., a Bronx minister, says Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo is forcing the Senate Republicans to vote for marriage.”

Today, New York State Senator and Reverend Rubén Díaz, an ordained Pentecostal minister, released a statement.

“I am amazed at how quickly I have been misquoted in the press regarding the issue of gay marriage.

“The press took one phrase from my comment and as a result it has appeared in this morning’s newspapers completely out of context.

“For the sake of accuracy, this is what I said:

“Because the Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo is making the Republicans do what the Democrats could not do when they were in the majority, the Republicans are bending to the Democratic Governor and gay marriage is inevitable in the State of New York.”
