Anti-Gay NHL Agent Now Playing Victim, Likens Gay Marriage To Bestiality

Uptown Sports, the Canada-based agent to major professional hockey players, is refusing to back down on its denouncement of Sean Avery’s stance on marriage equality, and on their comments against gay rights and marriage equality. In fact, it sounds like they’ve taken the Maggie Gallagher course in how to play the victim — and passed with flying colors.

“Very sad to read Sean Avery’s misguided support of same-gender “marriage”. Legal or not, it will always be wrong,” Uptown Sports wrote, via Twitter Monday night, as The New Civil Rights Movement reported. The statement continued, “To clarify. This is not hatred or bigotry towards gays. It is not intolerance in any way shape or form. I believe we are all equal… But I believe in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman. This is my personal viewpoint. I Do not hate anyone.”

Later Monday night, Todd Reynolds, the author of the homophobic tweets, said in an interview,

“There’s certainly a voice for the other side on this particular issue. I was merely responding to be the other voice. I believe in standing up for what you believe in. I’m passionate about what I believe in. And I believe in morality and I believe in right and wrong. I know many people with different view points for what is right and wrong. But I’m a little disappointed in some of the responses.

“If you oppose a viewpoint, you’re immediately targeted by some people as a hater, a bigot, intolerant, homophobic and many other terms. That’s obviously not the case for people who know me. … I don’t hate anyone. And I’m certainly not a bigot. But I believe in marriage between one man and one woman. It’s a social debate that’s raged on for quite some time. In Canada and the U.S. it’s a hot-button topic right now. I guess maybe it was how I was raised. I believe in voicing your opinion and not being part of the silent majority.”

Reynolds, son of Uptown Sports’ founder, is playing the victim card, just as Maggie Gallagher would have instructed.

“I’m a little disappointed in some of the responses.” Really? When you attack an entire group of people for who they are, and suggest they are morally wrong by the very nature of their existence, you have no right to be “disappointed” in the responses you get. Especially on a social media platform like Twitter. What were you thinking?

“But the majority, I think, of Canadians would say that they don’t agree with gay marriage – that man and woman were created to be married, not man and man or man and horse, you know?”

“If you oppose a viewpoint, you’re immediately targeted by some people as a hater, a bigot, intolerant, homophobic and many other terms.” Yup. And that’s what you deserve. Being anti-gay isn’t a viewpoint. Homosexuality isn’t a”viewpoint” or a lifestyle choice, nor is it subject to debate. It has existed as long as man has been alive, and is as natural as heterosexuality. Being anti-gay is like being anti-giraffe. They exist, get used to it.

“I’m certainly not a bigot. But I believe in marriage between one man and one woman. It’s a social debate that’s raged on for quite some time.” Wrongly. And so was interracial marriage. And so was, I imagine, the move to “traditional marriage” from polygamy.

“I believe in voicing your opinion and not being part of the silent majority.” Wrong – you’re not the silent majority. You’re actually voicing your opinion, a minority opinion, now. So, you’re the vocal minority.

“Reynolds broke just about every rule in the book among those who represent pro athletes for a living,” write Rick Chandler at NBC Sports’ Off The Bench.

Don Reynolds, Todd’s father, supports his son’s homophobia.

“It’s sad. I mean, my personal position is that I do not support gay marriage, and I think it’s wrong, as well. It’s not politically correct to, I guess, give your opinion about a thing like that. It’s politically correct on the other side, for people to say, ‘sure, I support gay marriage.’ But the majority, I think, of Canadians would say that they don’t agree with gay marriage – that man and woman were created to be married, not man and man or man and horse, you know?”

Well, I don’t know if there are polls about marriage equality in Canada, but it’s been the law of the land there for almost six years. And here in America, you would be wrong, as a majority of Americans support the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Oh, and you now who else disagrees with the Uptown Sports folks? Their competitors, who, I’m sure, have room to represent a few more enlightened pro hockey players.

But curiously, in response to the question, “Do you think something like this could either gain or lose you some clients?,” posed by the National Post, the senior Reynolds had a bit of a different point of view, saying, “I hope not. I don’t think that your opinion about gay marriage or sexual orientation or whatever should ever come into the hockey business. I’ve been in the hockey business for 28 years, and this is the first I’ve heard of it.”

The front page of the Uptown Sports site claims, “Commitment. Dedication. Integrity. The Way We do Business.” Perhaps they should now add “homophobia” to the list.
