Openly anti-gay Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann used Katy Perry’s pro-gay #1 hit song, “Firework,” as her theme song at the ultra-conservative Right Online conference over the weekend. Perry’s “Firework” video is infused with self-acceptance stories, includes a scene of two young men kissing. Perry’s other hit songs include, “Ur So Gay,” and, “I Kissed a Girl.”

Bachmann made her political career by attacking the LGBT community and has for many years used inflammatory, untrue, anti-gay rhetoric to attack the institution of marriage  for same-sex couples.
In 2004, attempting to get passed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in Minnesota, Bachmann said,
“If you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. It is personal bondage, personal despair and personal enslavement.â€
“And what a bizarre time we’re in … when a judge will say to little children that you can’t say the pledge of allegiance, but you must learn that homosexuality is normal and you should try it.â€
“It isn’t that some gay will get some rights. It’s that everyone else in our state will lose rights.”
In “honor” of her years of anti-gay hate and rhetoric, LGBT activists “glittered” Bachmann after he delivered her speech at the Right Online conference.
Later, at the Republican Leadership Conference, an Obama impersonator delivered a “speech” for 20 minutes which included anti-gay and racist “jokes.” He was ultimately pulled from the stage.
Released in October last year, Katy Perry’s “Firework” was dedicated to and used by Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” Project, which was created in “response to a number of students taking their own lives after being bullied in school, they wanted to create a personal way for supporters everywhere to tell LGBT youth that, yes, it does indeed get better.”
The Chicago Sun-Times adds, “Let the countdown begin to Katy Perry issuing a statement saying she’d really, really appreciate it if her song wasn’t associated with the Bachmann campaign.”
Bachmann apparently is following in the footsteps of the anti-gay marriage group, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which repeatedly has used and/or published copyrighted materials apparently without permission, including songs from John Mellencamp, and Peter, Paul, and Mary, a video from LGBT blogger Joe.My.God., and works from The Washington Post and The Atlantic.
