Anti-Gay Hate Group Leader Announces Senate Run Against Debbie Stabenow

The state President of the anti-gay hate group American Family Association in Michigan just announced he will be running for U.S. Senate in an attempt to unseat Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow. The American Family Association is a certified hate group, perhaps best-known by its public face, Bryan Fischer. Glenn, who has been courting the Tea Party by delivering speeches at their events, recently released a statement saying, “Our nation’s economy, security, liberties, moral foundation and founding principles — all that’s made America and Americans exceptional in the history of the world — are under attack from within.”

Senator Stabenow has voted NO on a constitutional ban of same-sex marriage, voted YES on adding sexual orientation to the definition of hate crimes, voted NO on banning gay adoptions in Washington, D.C., has an 89% rating from HRC and a 100% rating from the NAACP.

Gary Glenn has been called “one of the most rabidly anti-gay Religious Right activists operating today,” by Right Wing Watch (RWW). Here are a few more items from the good folks at RWW:

Gary Glenn is among the many “Conservative, Catholic and Evangelical Leaders” who signed a letter stating, “Most disturbing is the key role Mitt Romney played in accelerating two of the greatest threats to our Judeo-Christian culture and free enterprise system: Homosexual marriage and government control of health care.”

Last month on the radio, Glenn said, “What ridiculous folly to suggest that only those individuals who engage in homosexual behavior given all of its severe medical consequences constitute the best and the brightest. It’s not really bright to engage in behavior that puts you at dramatically higher risk of mental illness and substance abuse and AIDS and cancer and hepatitis, and according to various sources, premature death. So to suggest that engaging in that type of behavior defines someone as the best and brightest, which seems to be the line coming out of corporate America, is just ridiculous.”

And earlier this year, speaking with Peter laBarbera, Glenn said, “The homosexual activists are using the bullying issue, as you indicated, as a Trojan Horse. Their real objective is to establish in Michigan state law and in other states sexual orientation — i.e. homosexual behavior — and gender identity — i.e. cross-dressing — as the legal basis of rights and protections. So all we said was why do you insist on segregating students into these special protected class categories like sexual orientation and gender identity and then dole out protection against bullying expressly on the basis on a student’s membership in one of these protected classes, in other words, a segregation strategy.”
