Today, Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association admitted on his radio program that the head of the Boy Scouts of America personally contacted him in relation to their upcoming decision on repealing their ban against allowing gay people into the Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) today announced they will not change their policy and will retain their ban on gay people.

Fischer says in the audio below, “the head of the Boy Scouts called me,” and claimed that he promised Fischer, “We’re not going change our standards” — meaning, they are not going to let gays into the Boy Scouts. Fischer also claims the head of the BSA admitted they were “not doing a poll, and we’re not thinking about changing the policy.”
If Bryan Fischer, the public face of the American Family Association, is telling the truth, this is very disconcerting, as the Boy Scouts of America press release today specifically stated:
“The vast majority of the parents of youth we serve value their right to address issues of same-sex orientation within their family, with spiritual advisers, and at the appropriate time and in the right setting,†said Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive, Boy Scouts of America. “While a majority of our membership agrees with our policy, we fully understand that no single policy will accommodate the many diverse views among our membership or society.â€

In response to that specific statement, today, as we reported earlier, The New Civil Rights Movement via an email conversation asked the Boy Scouts of America:
“How does the BSA or Bob Mazzuca know what the majority ‘values’ or ‘agrees with’? Has there been a national/international poll directly questioning the membership on the gay ban?”
If Fischer is correct, and there was no poll, then their statement claiming “a majority of our membership agrees with our policy” could easily be assumed to be false.
Additionally, as The New Civil Rights Movement asked the BSA, “why were people with specific expertise in these matters not invited to be part of the study/examination? Wouldn’t it be the smart thing to do, to bring in outside experts?”
If the Boy Scouts of America believes that Bryan Fischer — the man who has said that gay people “are Nazis,” that gays sexually assault children at rates three times higher than straight people, that no gay person would be left alone in a room unsupervised with a child — is an expert on homosexuals, then there is a serious problem deep within the Boy Scouts.
Deron Smith, Public Relations Director of the Boy Scouts of America, refused to answer these questions, among others, across several email and telephone conversations.
Jeremy Hooper at Good As You, who provides the audio above, asks, “Did the Boy Scouts call GLAAD? HRC? Did they reach out to any of our groups to discuss their policy, or did they confine their outreach to a man who once said that ‘Homosexuality gave us Adolf Hitler’ (among countless other things)?”
