Ambulance-Chasing Pacific Justice Institute Is Calling Prop 8 Supporters To See If They’re OK

Someone needs to put some real numbers on this, and fast. These ludicrous reports from the right, including last week’s offensive ad in The New York Times, “No Mob Veto” (because now that gay rights proponents have some support and traction, we’re a “mob”) and right-wing pundits and “traditional family values” organizations are making a few hoodlums’ antics and a few overly-zealous anti-Prop 8 activists look like there are dozens of severely-injured, pure, loving, innocent victims affected by H8.
Press Release from The Pacific Justice Institute:
“In the wake of threats to the safety and livelihoods of people and groups who supported Prop. 8, Pacific Justice Institute is offering legal assistance and closely monitoring potential violations of the law.”
“PJI is contacting each of the Prop. 8 supporters whose names have been publicized on the internet in an attempt to target their jobs and businesses.”
(Ambulance-chase much?)
Keep in mind that The Pacific Justice Institute is the same group that wanted to deny gays in California state-funded services, battled the ACLU in order to censor content in public libraries, claimed Los Angeles and Sacramento would have to change their names if separation of church and state were enforced, and, yes, said “failure to pass Prop 8 is akin to failing to stop Hitler”. (Information via Right Wing Watch.)
Well, it’s just not true. There just aren’t that many people involved or “victimized.” Personally, I think anyone, regardless of their position on Prop 8, who sent white powder to a church, or fired someone because it was learned third-hand that they voted for Prop 8, is wrong. I don’t think someone should lose their job if they voted for Prop 8. I also don’t think it’s workplace conversation.
Regardless, now the right-wing proselytizers are going to do everything in their power to make us look bad. Don’t give them the opportunity.
