Alabama GOP Congressional Candidate Wants Gays To ‘Go Back To Wherever They Came From’

Voters in Alabama today will decide if they want to send a Tea Party Republican to Congress who wants gay people to “go back to California or Vermont or wherever they came from.” Republican Dean Young is running is a special primary today against an establishment candidate backed by business and more mainstream conservatives. Given that it’s south Alabama, the winner, being a Republican, is all but guaranteed a seat in Congress.

His suggestion that gays have no right to live in Alabama was from 2002, mind you, but if you’re thinking of giving Young the benefit of the doubt, don’t. In 1996, he told LGBT activists that the people in his Alabama county, “are going to stand against the homosexual lifestyle and against things that are against the laws of God,” and told them to “get your lives straight” or “get back in the closet where you came from.”

But if you’re thinking this is all just ancient history, don’t.

During the race this year, Young asked all his Republican opponents to sign a pledge opposing same-sex marriage. “I’m against homosexuals pretending like they’re married,” he says. “Marriage is between one man and one woman and no one needs to go to Washington representing south Alabama if they don’t believe that,” Young said on TV, and in a YouTube video that proudly graces the first article you see on the front page of his campaign website. “If you want to have homosexuals pretending like they’re married, they need to go to the Democrat party.”

So, of course, sensing a compatriot, the certified anti-gay hate group leader, American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer, invited Young on his radio show yesterday.

“I will stand on the floor of the House and say that we are a Christian nation, we are a Christian people,” Young told Fischer. And since ENDA is on the agenda this week, Young had a few thoughts on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. “I would be against them putting that into the employment whatever you call it.”

Of course, if voters don’t elect Young today, he warns, the nation is a goner.

“We’ve got people who believe, from the bottom of their heart, that if we don’t turn this nation back to the godly principles that it was found on, we’re going to lose this nation.” Young is under the mistaken impression that his race us a “bellwether for the rest of the nation.”

(Dean, sorry to break it to you, but until this week, and it’s only Tuesday, practically no one in American ever heard of you before.)

Young says that old timer Phyllis Schlafly, head of the racist Eagle Forum, is supporting him (big surprise). So is Fox News contributor and America’s least-self-aware political pundit, Erick Erickson, and former Tea Party of Nevada gubernatorial candidate Sharron Angle, who claims separation of church and state is unconstitutional. Also supporting Young is Sarah Palin‘s favorite pundit, Mark Levin, author of Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto, and The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic.
