After Anti-Gay Rant, Kirk Cameron Gets “Monumental” Support From Hate Group Head

Kirk Cameron is getting support from the head of a certified anti-gay hate group after the former teen star attacked gays and lesbians while speaking on Piers Morgan Tonight last Friday. Cameron, who became an Evangelical when he was 17, told the CNN talk show host that homosexuality is “unnatural” and  “destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.” Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association, sent AFA’s followers an email promoting Cameron’s new film, and falsely claiming Cameron merely stated his belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman. In fact, Cameron said far more than that. Can we all take a moment to wonder why? Was this AFA-Cameron team-up a pre-arranged deal?

“Evangelist and actor Kirk Cameron has come under hateful pressure by homosexuals for simply stating God’s view that marriage is between one man and one woman,” Wildmon writes, but then admits that “Cameron told CNN’s Piers Morgan that marriage ‘was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve — one man, one woman for life.’ He added that in his view, homosexuality is ‘socially destructive,’ ‘unnatural,’ ‘detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization’.”

Wildmon, who head the very same organization that is home to Bryan Fischer — the man who has said that “gays are Nazis,” and worse — apparently cannot make the distinction between simply stating a belief, as false as it may be, and attacking, demonizing, and castigating an entire segment of the population.

Singling out an entire group of people and calling them “socially destructive,” “unnatural,” and “detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization,” is not “simply stating God’s view that marriage is between one man and one woman,” it is demonizing an entire segment of the population, and it’s wrong.

“Appearing on CNN’s Peirs [sic] Morgan show this week to promote his new movie MONUMENTAL: In Search of America’s National Treasure, Kirk was repeatedly badgered by the host to share his views on homosexuality. (See my P.S. below),” wrote Wildmon — plugging Cameron’s movie. And who could doubt that it is Cameron’s  which is the real reason for his decision to attack the LGBT community

Of course, Wildmon takes the time to demonize GLAAD, who rightly and appropriately mounted a campaign denouncing Cameron’s hateful anti-gay rhetoric. “Immediately, the homosexual media pressure group GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) began attacking Kirk as an ‘anti-gay extremist’,” Wildon states, ignoring the fact that Cameron is an anti-gay extremist.

And does anyone else find it odd that AFA would launch this new attack on the LGBT community, in the ridiculously obvious form of an email harvesting and fundraising tool, the day after they threw in the towel on their failed One Million Moms attack on JC Penny and Ellen DeGeneres?

“Increasingly, social bullies like GLADD [sic] are merciless in their attack on Christians who openly share their faith, and God’s truth that the homosexual lifestyle is sinful. Kirk is not ashamed of the Gospel and I think he deserves our thanks.”

No, Cameron deserves exactly what he got: correction by groups like GLAAD, LGBT bloggers, and millions of our LGBT and straight allies.
