A Quarter Of Republicans Believe Obama Is The Anti-Christ

Back in early February, I wrote, “Gays: Do Republicans Really Hate Us?” While most of you responded with a resounding, “Yes!,” some of you may not have thought the Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll “of over 2,000 self-identified Republicans” that prompted the question was “valid.” Well, now a just-released Harris poll reveals similar positions among America’s Republicans.

So, here are some of the Harris poll’s findings:

• 57% of Republicans think Obama is a Muslim.
• 67% of Republicans think Obama is a Socialist.
• 45% of Republicans think Obama was “not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president.”
• 38% of Republicans say that Obama is “doing many of the things that Hitler did.”

And yes,

• 24% of Republicans say that Obama “may be the Antichrist.”

Compare them with the Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll of over 2,000 self-identified Republicans:

• Should Barack Obama be impeached, or not? YES 39%
• Do you believe Barack Obama was born in the United States, or not? NO 36%
• Do you think Barack Obama is a socialist? YES 63%
• Do you believe Barack Obama is a racist who hates White people? YES 31%

Remember, there were these findings among Republicans in the Daily KOS poll, too:

• Should openly gay men and women be allowed to serve in the military? NO 55%
• Should same sex couples be allowed to marry? NO 77%
• Should gay couples receive any state or federal benefits? NO 68%
• Should openly gay men and women be allowed to teach in public schools? NO 73%

The Daily Beast’s John Avalon calls this “Obama Derangement Syndrome—pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism.” I agree.

Now that health care reform has passed and is law, there’s great irony in that this Democratic success has become the GOP’s Waterloo, and that, as David Frum puts it, “Republicans originally thought that Fox worked for us, and now we are discovering we work for Fox.”
