“It Gets Better” In Torrington, Connecticut, Too

The tiny city of Torrington, Connecticut, a former mill town in sleepy — and very traditional — upstate Connecticut, runs for about 40 square miles by the Naugatuck River and is home to all of about 36,000 people. Its few major claims to fame include both the irony of its extraordinarily low crime rate coupled with it being the locus of “A Cry for Help: The Tracey Thurman Story,” which starred Nancy McKeon in the title role. Torrington’s two other claims to fame are that it gave birth to Dick Ebersol, who, coincidentally, today resigned as chairman of NBC Universal Sports, and that it is rated number one on a list of “Dreamtowns.”

Now that you have an idea about Torringtown, you should applaud its local newspaper, the Register-Citizen, for having the courage and foresight to host the ACLU tonight in a forum on anti-gay bullying, or as they write, “a forum on bullying, especially as it relates to lesbian, gay and transgender youth.”

The Register-Citizen’s publisher, Matt DeRienzo, and reporter Jason Siedzik recorded an “It Gets Better” video, too. And they promise to publish your same-sex wedding announcement, too, since same-sex couples can legally marry in Connecticut.

Watch it, and thank them.
