“God Hates Fags,” the self-monikered Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), promised yesterday to picket at the scene of the Newtown, Connecticut elementary school shooting. Shortly thereafter, Anonymous, the Internet “hacktivist” collective took credit for hacking and taking down the Westboro Baptist Church’s websites.
The Westboro Baptist Church is a Southern Poverty Law Center certified anti-gay hate group known for protesting and picketing the funerals of LGBT people, soldiers, and celebrities, to spread their messages of hate.
“Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment,” Shirley Phelps-Roper of the WBC stated via Twitter:

Outrage ensued.
“Members of the website Reddit announced their intent to form a silent blockade to counter protest the church,” Buzzfeed reported, and, later added:
The hacker group Anonymous targeted the Westboro Baptist Church website after members announced plans to protest in Sandy Hook. The group released all of the personal information of members of the church.
Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski posted this tweet this afternoon:

Here’s the message Anonymous sent to WBC:

This is not the first time Anonymous has hacked the Westboro Baptist Church.
In early 2011, Anonymous threatened the WBC it would take down their Internet presence if they did not comply with their directive to “Cease & desist your protest campaign,†and “close your public Web sites.†Anonymous claimed the “damage incurred will be irreversible, and neither your institution nor your congregation will ever be able to fully recover.â€Â Indeed, the WBC network was down for months, although it emerged with a facelift.
