“Gay Marriage” Is Out! “Sodomy Based Marriage” Is In!

“Gay marriage” is so 2011. Remember last week when we reported that some conservatives believe America’s third party will focus only on defeating same-sex marriage across the nation? Well, it appears they have their own Super PAC now, and it’s called the No Special Rights PAC. The No Special Rights PAC asks that you use “the term ‘Sodomy Based Marriage’ and avoid the deceptive terms ‘same sex or gay marriage’.” No Special Rights is based in Maine and is trying to defeat a voter ballot initiative that would deliver same-sex marriage — I mean “sodomy based” marriage — back to same-sex — I mean “sodomy based” — couples.

No Special Rights Truth PAC, founded by partners Paul Madore and Mike Heath — the pair have been anti-gay activists for 20 years — even has its own version of NOM’s and Bob Vander Plaats’ Marriage Vow, but this one the voters, not the candidates, sign. The fact that now almost six out of 10 Maine voters support marriage equality doesn’t seem to phase this latest attempt to use hatred of gay people as an ATM.

In fact, Mike Heath’s website shows he is a direct mail fundraising consultant. So, the anti-gay PAC is yet another convenient way to pay for the kids’ college education and stuff some away for retirement, one could easily assume.

Zack Ford at Think Progress notes that the “pledge also refers to marriage equality as ‘an attack on the religious freedom of all Christian men and women’ that oppresses, silences, and persecutes ‘those who hold religious or moral objections to homosexuality’ and seeks to introduce ‘homosexual indoctrination into the curricula of our schools.’ Madore also told reporters that homosexuality represents a ‘culture of death.'”

Ford adds:

Madore and Heath’s rhetoric is unabashedly anti-gay, but it’s important to note that all of the rhetoric fits the models offered by groups that use tamer language, like the National Organization for Marriage and Catholic Church. By framing the effort around so-called “religious freedom” and protecting children, No Special Rights PAC is fighting with fear and trying to erase same-sex families and the many faith communities that support them.

Curiously, Heath lists himself as the Iowa State Director, 2011 – 2012, for Ron Paul for President. And he’s also an active anti-abortion activist and lobster fishing fan.

Unsurprisingly, Heath is a former  board Chairman of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH) now an SPLC-certified anti-gay hate group.

By comparison, Madore is a recluse — little about him is available, but Towleroad has this article from 2009, and Jeremy Hooper at Good As You offers this lovely quote from Paul Madore:

“It’s time to get serious with society on the issue of homosexuality and the practical effects that are very harmful to society that this distorted and perverted lifestyle will have. It’s time to take the gloves off,” said Paul Madore. “Good people just keep moving the line back regarding homosexuality. But not anymore.”

Madore continued, “Maine people are coming together to say ‘enough is enough’. Marriage does not belong to homosexuals. It never has and it never will. Even if people get tired of saying no, and end up caving on the issue.”

“On that note,” said Madore, “The only reason why the number of supporters for same sex ‘marriage’ may be increasing is because people are sick and tired. Homosexuals have made people sick and tired. Homosexuals have absolutely nothing good to contribute to family life, which is what marriage is all about. A sterile union (between same sex couples) is never in need of marriage, and has nothing good to contribute to marriage or family life – absolutely nothing.”

No word on what “it’s time to get serious” means, but it reminds us a little of “second amendment remedies.”

“Heath and Madore have held leadership roles going back to the early 1990s opposing gay rights and gay marriage initiatives in Maine. Heath was executive director of the Christian Civic League for 15 years until his resignation in 2009, and Madore once headed a group called Maine Grassroots Coalition that opposed sexual orientation laws,” the Bangor Daily News reports:

As the name implies, the goal of the No Special Rights PAC is to convince voters that allowing members of the same sex to get married amounts to “special rights,” Heath said.

“There’s no basis in nature for a right to sodomy or a right to call two men or two women who are choosing to relate to one another sexually as a marriage,” he said. “There’s no intrinsic or natural right to that. So we believe that these are special rights.”

Heath and Madore’s PAC has yet to raise any money, and the amount of funds raised will determine what it does during the campaign, Heath said.
